The eye center “Perfect Vision” marked the World White Cane Day

“With free examinations and a lecture at the Open University, the Eye Center “Perfect Vision” marked the International White Cane Day.

Interest in the free eye examination was, as every year, high, and room 212 at the Open University was filled to capacity. After measuring eye pressure and examination of the fundus, which requires dilation of the pupils, mostly elderly citizens had the opportunity to learn about the most common causes of blindness, preventive measures and the right time to visit an ophthalmologist.

– Among the four main causes of blindness are senile macular degeneration, which mainly affects the elderly over 50 years of age, followed by diabetic retinopathy as a result of diabetes, glaucoma and cataracts. The most important thing is to detect diseases in time, so that they can be treated in time. You shouldn’t wait until something hurts and something is wrong, you should call before that. The first reading glasses, which are needed after the age of 40, should prompt a person to contact an eye doctor for a complete examination, so if it is determined that everything is good, all the better, and if not, that we can react in time – advises ophthalmologist Dr. Ivana Ambruš Ivazović .

Special attention was paid to cataract, which is faced by every fifth person after the age of 60.

– Cataract occurs in most people, genetic predisposition, living conditions, exposure to radiation and smoking are risk factors for the development of this disease. Today, as far as we can see, most of the eye pathology is caused by cataracts – says Dr. Ambuš Ivazović and adds that although there is no adequate medical therapy for cataracts, unpleasant visual disturbances can be removed – Cataracts are a solvable condition, but still the only way of treatment is surgery. No drops, medicines, tablets that exist on the market are a solution for preventing and treating cataracts, this is only possible with surgery. The eye center “Perfect vision” performs this type of surgery, using a modern ultrasound method, and in that part of ophthalmology, I can safely say, we are experts.”
