DRY EYES – Technology and its impact on vision, how to protect yourself?

Modern devices and eye health

Today, we cannot imagine life without modern technologies. The use of computers, smartphones, tablets and other devices has become an indispensable part of our everyday life. In addition to the many advantages and benefits that these tools bring us, there are also certain consequences for the health of our eyes.

You can also read this text from a mobile phone, computer or laptop. You probably missed that on that occasion you blinked less often than the average 5 to 10 times per minute . After looking at screens for a long time, headache and discomfort in the eye area will occur. We all know that feeling, right?

Computer vision syndrome

This phenomenon is called computer vision syndrome and is experienced by 70-75% of the population , regardless of whether they have vision problems or not. The main symptoms are redness of the eyes, dryness and unpleasant burning in the eye area, often accompanied by a headache. Fortunately, there is no evidence so far that this condition leads to permanent problems.

Myopia and screens

A greater concern is caused by the increasingly common occurrence of short-sightedness, first of all in children, but also in adults. One of the main culprits is the development of mobile phones. Every year, the graphics and colors of the screen become better and better, but this increases the radiation and reduces the ability of the eye to adapt to different distances. The high resolution of an image viewed from less than 50 cm often results in near focus, while weakening the eye’s ability to focus on distant objects. Spending time in nature and moderate exposure to daylight can alleviate this phenomenon and slow down the development of myopia.

What can we do?

  • Taking more frequent breaks when using a mobile or computer.
  • Resting the eyes and looking into the distance at the first symptoms of fatigue.
  • Adjusting the screen brightness and using a darker background when possible.
  • Use of artificial tears ( Bepanthol, Thealoz Duo… ) if dryness and burning persist.
  • Using special glasses with a blue filter to protect against harmful radiation and reflections.
