Cataract (gray cataract) is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which the patient experiences as a decrease in vision. The only way to treat a cataract is surgery.
The most modern method of cataract surgery, phacoemulsification, involves the use of ultrasound to remove the cloudy lens in the eye and the implantation of a special intraocular lens. This lens remains permanently in the eye, taking over the function of the natural lens and providing clear vision.
Preoperative examination for cataract surgery
As part of the preparation for surgery, a detailed examination is performed, lasting about 1 hour. This examination includes:
Visual acuity testingMeasurement of intraocular pressureExamination on a biomicroscopeOptical biometryUltrasound biometryUltrasound examination
The patient receives a detailed verbal and written explanation of the entire course of the surgery, postoperative recovery, as well as possible operative and postoperative complications.
As part of the preoperative preparation, it is also necessary to perform laboratory tests and an internal medicine examination in order to obtain clearance from a specialist for the surgery. Perfect Vision is an integral part of the Polyclinic Kuća zdravlja, so our patients can complete these examinations in one place, in just a few hours.
Cataract surgery
As part of the preoperative preparation, the patient’s intraocular and blood pressure are measured and a mild sedative is given. Drops to dilate the pupils are instilled and local topical anesthesia is administered, making the surgery painless and comfortable.
Instillation of topical anesthesiaMeasurement of intraocular pressureMeasurement of blood pressure
During surgery, the patient is awake, conscious and in constant communication with the doctor. They hear the sound of the ultrasound device and the surgeon’s voice, who “guides” them through the surgery, and feel changes in the eye (the light of the operating microscope, the fluid used to rinse the eye, slight pressure during intraocular lens implantation), but they do not feel pain.
To perform the surgery, special high-precision phaco machines are used. The surgery is performed through a small incision (1.8mm–2.75mm) that does not require suturing. Such a wound heals quickly and without discomfort, making recovery pleasant for the patient. The entire surgery does not last longer than 10–15 minutes.
Cataract (gray cataract) surgery
Thanks to this modern approach, cataract surgery is a one-day procedure, which means that the patient goes home after the surgery.
Postoperative procedure after cataract surgery
Just a few days after surgery, the patient can return to their usual activities, with appropriate therapy and the prescribed hygiene regimen. Full recovery takes 3–4 weeks, and during this period patients are restricted from heavy physical activities, bending, sports activities, working in dirty and dusty environments, as well as working with animals.
Check-up after cataract surgery
Follow-up examinations are recommended after one day, seven days and one month. At the one-month follow-up, visual acuity is checked and glasses are prescribed if needed, depending on the type of intraocular lens the patient has chosen.

Find answers to the most common questions about laser vision correction, cataracts and lens implantation. Everything you need to know before deciding on a procedure.
No, the procedure is completely painless. It takes only a few minutes, and as early as the next day you can function normally without glasses or lenses.
If you notice that your vision is blurry, colors are fading and you struggle to drive at night, these are clear warning signs. Surgery restores clear vision and once cataracts are diagnosed, it should not be postponed.
The biggest advantage is that you forget about glasses – both for near and far. This means you can read a book, use your phone and drive without additional visual aids.
You absolutely do! Toric lenses are specifically designed to correct astigmatism and provide clear vision.
These are artificial lenses that are placed inside the eye, while your natural lens remains untouched. They are an excellent option for younger people with high diopters who are not candidates for laser vision correction.
